Making the SB1 Remake


Hi, hello, welcome to the very obligatory spike bomb 1 remake dev log!

In this dev log I'll talk about the process of making this game and how I tried to fix the mess that the original was.So doumb!!!!

This game is made for the: Improve My Game Jam 28!




(and fixing the trash)

This remake is made with the current version of Spike bomb 2, that means that the physics and moveset are the same as what spike bomb 2 is right now.

This automatically leads to better gameplay than the original Spike bomb.

The original was way too floaty and it felt very unresponsive, I know how to get arround it and can play mostly good, but that is a given since I made it. SB2 is much more responsive, and the moveset is made to enhance the movility and make it easier to move and make cool stuff.

The level design has been mostly recreated, the "grass" and "snow" level beeing almost un-edited, and the sewers beeing the most edited (also the final level is made from scratch to make the best ending experience). 

The level design is obiously not made for the moveset and physics of 2, but I think it still works

Also with the new moveset, you can do stuff like this.

The final boss is re-made as well

Originaly the final boss and final level (+story) where locked behind the "golden flower rank", but now there are no ranks, so the end is aviable to everyone!

If you are thinking about going back and trying to get that... don't! it's not really worth it!

The final level is not bad, but the final boss is.

and the story was really just a poor afterthough.

and talking about story...

 (now there actually IS a story!)

The original technically had a story... but it was porly explained (and sometimes just... NOT explained), messy, and with the ending beeing locked behind a good rank, most people won't even see the real plot.

It was also made as I went along making the game, so I didn't have the full picture up untill like, the end of development

Now things are actually explained and there is setup for stuff.

There also can now be set up for stuff for spike bomb 2's story!

It's not the most amazing story ever, but it's a nice cherry on top.


Remaking this game has been nice, making a full game in a short time has felt really nice, since im constanly doing stuff and making a complete project, also I got an oportunity to explore the potencial of the original game a bit more and make things better.

Also on release, the ending was unfinished and had a few glitches due to not having anough time and beeing tired
